Jalen Reeves-Maybin has secured his stay in Detroit, marking a significant milestone with his upcoming contract extension. As reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Reeves-Maybin has inked a two-year deal with the Lions, bypassing the impending free agency window.
Valued at $7.5 million, with a potential ceiling of $8 million, this contract includes $5.245 million guaranteed, highlighted by a $2.5 million signing bonus. Garafolo notes that this compensation sets a new standard, establishing Reeves-Maybin as the most highly compensated core special-teamer in history.
Originally drafted by the Lions in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Reeves-Maybin initially served as a backup linebacker and contributor on special teams. However, his opportunity to shine came in the 2021 season when he stepped into a starting role, commencing 11 games out of 15 appearances and tallying 82 tackles alongside two forced fumbles.
Following this standout season, Reeves-Maybin secured a two-year deal with the Texans, but predominantly operated in a special teams capacity during his tenure in Houston. Upon his release from the Texans last offseason, he returned to Detroit on a one-year contract. Throughout the season, he showcased his prowess as a special teams specialist, culminating in 20 tackles and several noteworthy performances. Recognizing his contributions, the 29-year-old earned second-team All-Pro recognition.
