ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — As the Denver Broncos gear up for a busy offseason, the future of cornerback Pat Surtain II is a pressing concern.
Surtain’s value within the team is undisputed, amplifying the significance of his future with the Broncos. His teammates, recognizing his prowess, are keenly interested in what unfolds.
“He’s undeniably one of our top players, if not the best,” remarked safety Justin Simmons.
The decisions regarding Surtain in the coming months will indicate whether the team’s management aligns with the sentiments in the locker room.
“We all admire Pat,” stated Broncos general manager George Paton. “We envision a long-term future for him, but I’m not ready to commit to any decisions just yet.”
Given the significant changes in coaching staff and management in recent years, the Broncos haven’t had a first-round pick since selecting Surtain in 2021. He stands out as the lone defensive first-round pick and one of only three first-rounders on the roster.
In light of Surtain’s impressive early career achievements, including two Pro Bowl selections in three seasons, he’s eligible for a fifth-year option, projecting at $18.65 million for 2025. The Broncos could opt for this while negotiating a longer-term deal.
However, if they opt not to exercise this option, as was the case with Garett Bolles before his extension in 2020, Surtain would become a free agent after 2024.
The potential use of a franchise tag looms, particularly given the team’s salary-cap constraints and quarterback uncertainties.
Surtain remains focused on self-improvement amidst the speculation: “I’m dedicated to honing my skills and becoming the best player I can be.”
Addressing the need for a cornerback opposite Surtain is paramount. The coaching staff, along with management, is assessing options ahead of the scouting combine.
With the 12th pick in the upcoming draft, the Broncos have an opportunity to bolster their cornerback position. Players like Terrion Arnold, Quinyon Mitchell, Nate Wiggins, and Cooper DeJean are among the top prospects.
Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph stresses the importance of complementing Surtain effectively: “Balancing our defensive strategy to maximize Pat’s impact while addressing the cornerback position opposite him is crucial.”
In summary, the Broncos face critical decisions regarding Surtain’s future and fortifying their cornerback position, both of which will significantly influence their defensive prowess moving forward.
