Just over a year ago, on February 21, 2023, Patrick Kane came close to concluding his tenure with the Blackhawks in a storybook manner. Although it wasn’t his final appearance donning the Blackhawks jersey, it marked his last game at the United Center wearing their colors, adding significance to his almost game-winning goal in overtime.
However, despite the excitement, his goal was invalidated due to being a fraction too late. Reflect on the moment here.
Fast forward to now, exactly a year later, Kane is set to make his return to Chicago, stepping onto the ice of the United Center for the first time since that memorable game. Coinciding with the retirement ceremony of Chris Chelios’ No. 7 jersey, Kane will be back at the United Center, this time as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, facing off against Connor Bedard and the Blackhawks.
This occasion marks Kane’s inaugural visit to the United Center following his trade to the New York Rangers precisely one year and four days prior to the February 25th game. The near-perfect, albeit invalid, buzzer-beating goal stands as his final act on Chicago ice.
After finishing the 2022-23 season with the Rangers, Kane joined the Detroit Red Wings earlier in the current season. So far, he has amassed nine goals and 14 assists in 24 games.
Undoubtedly, Kane will receive a thunderous standing ovation from the United Center faithful, making for an incredibly memorable evening.
