The Detroit Lions have been searching for a reliable pass rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, and they signed veteran Marcus Davenport this offseason to address that need. However, Davenport’s history of injuries raises concerns, an analyst warns.
Colton Pouncy from The Athletic reviewed Detroit’s defensive lineup, highlighting the uncertainty about Davenport’s contributions and his ability to stay healthy throughout the season.
“A talented but often-injured defensive end signed to a one-year deal. If he remains healthy, Davenport can be a high-impact player opposite Hutchinson and defend the run well. But his injury history makes this a significant concern,” Pouncy wrote.
Davenport has faced numerous injuries during his six-year NFL career, playing only four games last season with the Minnesota Vikings due to a high ankle sprain. His recovery took longer than expected, prompting KSTP-TV reporter Darren Wolfson to question his commitment to returning.
“I would’ve said two weeks ago that the Vikings expected him back by now. They haven’t even announced reopening his window, so it’s a peculiar situation,” Wolfson said on SKOR North’s Mackey & Judd. “He’s been out of the walking boot for at least 10 to 14 days. But the player must have the desire to return. So, if you read between the lines, there are questions about his commitment. Hopefully, something changes, and they can reopen the window before the season ends.”
Davenport has accumulated 149 career tackles and 23.5 sacks, peaking in the 2021 season with the New Orleans Saints with 9.5 sacks and 39 total tackles.
The Lions will likely continue to rely on Hutchinson, who has emerged as a breakout star over his two seasons in Detroit. The 23-year-old edge rusher earned a Pro Bowl selection last season, recording 11.5 sacks, 36 tackles, and 7 pass defenses.
Hutchinson has ambitious plans for the upcoming year, telling Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit that he believes this is the year the team will break through. The Lions had one of their best seasons in franchise history in 2023 but fell short of the Super Bowl, losing a 17-point lead to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.
“I feel like it’s the year. With every fiber of my body, I feel like it’s the year,” Hutchinson said. “Honestly, from this year on, every year is the year, with the guys that we have. I hope we sustain this success for a long time.”
