The Washington Capitals traded for forward Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames on Thursday, giving up a draft pick in return.
The Flames acquired a 2025 second-round pick, originally obtained by the Capitals from the Colorado Avalanche in March 2023 in exchange for forward Lars Eller.
“This trade enhances our draft capital, and we’ve stressed the importance of upcoming drafts in shaping our franchise’s future,” said Flames general manager Craig Conroy. “It also gives us greater salary-cap and roster flexibility post-July 1.”
Mangiapane, 28, scored 14 goals and 26 assists in 75 games for the Flames last season. Throughout his seven NHL seasons, all with Calgary, he has tallied 109 goals and 106 assists in 417 games.
This move is part of Washington’s efforts to boost their offense. The Capitals averaged 2.63 goals per game last season, placing them 28th in the NHL. Last week, they also acquired center Pierre-Luc Dubois from the Kings in exchange for goalie Darcy Kuemper. Dubois recorded 16 goals and 24 assists for Los Angeles last season.
