In 2023, the New York Jets relied heavily on their robust defense and special teams units to carry the team when quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles just four plays into the season.
Now, the special teams face the challenge of filling the gap left by Justin Hardee Sr., a former Pro Bowl selection and All-Pro player, who has departed in free agency to join his hometown Cleveland Browns. Hardee expressed his gratitude to the Jets organization and his teammates, acknowledging his three-year tenure with the team as a significant chapter in his career.
Although Hardee, who recently turned 30, had a limited statistical impact last season with just five tackles in 11 games, his contributions were instrumental to the Jets’ special teams success. During his time with the team, they led the league in kickoff coverage, allowing only 15.4 yards per return, and boasted strong opponents’ gross punting, averaging 44.5 yards per punt.
This upcoming season marks Hardee’s eighth year in the NFL, following his initial four seasons with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent from Illinois.
