The dynamic young player, Tristan Sailor, has showcased his versatility by playing both fullback and offering coverage in the halves. Broncos icon Gorden Tallis has suggested that Brisbane coach Kevin Walters should utilize Sailor’s dynamic skills in the halves for the upcoming Queensland derby against the Dolphins. This suggestion comes amidst Reece Walsh’s imminent return and Adam Reynolds’ absence due to a hamstring injury.
Although Reynolds’ hamstring injury seems less severe than initially feared, he is expected to miss only a few weeks. Tallis believes there should be a place for Sailor, the son of rugby league legend Wendell Sailor, particularly alongside another talented youngster, Ezra Mam.
Sailor’s ability to cover multiple positions makes him an attractive asset for many NRL teams. However, once Walsh and Reynolds return, determining Sailor’s most suitable role becomes challenging.
With a crucial Round 6 match against the table-topping Dolphins looming at Suncorp Stadium, the Broncos are weighing their options, with Jock Madden emerging as a leading contender.
Sailor’s recent performances, especially in Walsh’s absence at fullback, have sparked conversations about his potential inclusion in the halves alongside Mam.
“If Reece Walsh is fit, Tristan Sailor could be an excellent choice in the halves,” remarked Gorden Tallis after Brisbane’s narrow loss to the Melbourne Storm.
Sailor’s impressive form in the preseason and his ability to play various positions, including five-eighth and halfback, have positioned him as a regular selection candidate in Walters’ top 17.
The Broncos’ options include recalling Madden, who previously filled in for Reynolds, or adjusting the backline to accommodate Sailor in the halves, potentially moving Selwyn Cobbo to fullback and bringing veteran Corey Oates onto the wing if Walsh is not ready to return.
Former NSW Blues and Newcastle Knights star Matty Johns acknowledges Sailor’s promise but expresses concerns that Mam is more suited to five-eighth than the role of a game-managing halfback.
“Jock Madden is a talented young player, and I think he will make his way into the side,” Johns said. “While it may seem logical to move Ezra to seven, it could impact his ability to direct the team around the park. I believe they will opt for a specialist halfback in Jock Madden.”
“Tristan is the epitome of a team player,” noted Wendell Sailor, further endorsing the potential partnership with Mam to wreak havoc on the field.
Kevin Walters also faces defensive challenges, particularly after the Broncos conceded 34 points against the Storm in Round 5.
