Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider is encountering some worries following his recent matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 25-year-old right-hander experienced discomfort in his elbow during Friday night’s game, leading the team to plan an MRI for Saturday, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman.
Several aspects of Strider’s performance on Friday were cause for concern. Firstly, his fastball velocity dipped below his usual standard, averaging 95.9 mph compared to his typical 97.2 mph. Additionally, he struggled on the mound, conceding five runs on seven hits and three walks in just four innings.
Despite this setback, Strider has been an impressive pitcher in the league in recent seasons. With a career ERA of 3.37 and notable statistics, such as a 115 ERA+ last season, he has established himself as a vital player for the Braves.
Should Strider require time off due to an elbow injury, the Braves have various options to fill his spot in the rotation, including young talents like AJ Smith-Shawver and Bryce Elder, as well as experienced pitchers like Dylan Dodd, Allan Winans, and Huascar Ynoa.
Braves manager Brian Snitker announced that Spencer Strider will undergo an MRI on Friday morning. Strider informed the team’s medical staff about discomfort in his right elbow after struggling through four innings in Atlanta’s 6-5, 10-inning victory against the D-backs.
Snitker remarked, “I thought it was just one of those nights. Then he came in and was complaining about his elbow.”
Despite Strider’s difficulties, the Braves mounted a comeback in Friday’s game, scoring late runs to force extra innings and ultimately clinching victory in the 10th inning thanks to Travis d’Arnaud’s timely hit. The series against the Diamondbacks continues, and the Braves will closely monitor Strider’s condition while adjusting their lineup accordingly.
