According to Bleacher Report NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the New York Jets are hosting Rome Odunze, a wide receiver from Washington, for a top-30 visit on Wednesday, April 3. Schultz quoted a longtime NFL scout who likened Odunze to Davante Adams, but with a larger stature. The scout praised Odunze’s skills at the line of scrimmage, comparing his footwork to that of Adams and predicting he’ll be a standout player from day one.
The Jets had pursued Davante Adams during the offseason, even attempting to trade for him last season, but were unsuccessful. There were rumors that they might try again in the current offseason. However, the Raiders, Adams’ team, had stated they weren’t interested in trading him. Instead, the Jets signed Mike Williams to a one-year deal worth $10 million, with a significant portion guaranteed.
Should the Jets fail to acquire Adams, Odunze could be a compelling alternative. The 21-year-old wide receiver showed consistent improvement over his four years at Washington, culminating in a stellar final season where he recorded impressive stats.
As the Jets hold the No. 10 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, there’s speculation about whether any of the top wide receivers will be available. Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic believes Odunze has the highest chance of being available at that spot, albeit slim. If he is, the Jets could potentially form one of the best wide receiver trios in the league with Odunze, Garrett Wilson, and Williams.
Despite having a talented pair of receivers, the Jets are cautious about Williams’ recovery from a torn ACL, with coach Robert Saleh stating he has a long way to go. General manager Joe Douglas doesn’t expect Williams to be ready for training camp, but the team hopes he’ll be fit for the season opener. Therefore, having a reliable backup like Odunze becomes crucial, not just for immediate contributions but also for long-term prospects alongside Wilson.
NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein believes Odunze’s exceptional ball skills could make him a Day 1 starter and a top-tier WR1 in the future, emphasizing his potential significance to the Jets’ offense.
