The Atlanta Braves’ Opening Day was postponed by a day due to weather conditions, while most other MLB teams kicked off the 2024 season as scheduled. Although many rosters were already filled, there are still free agents awaiting opportunities.
Adam Duvall faced a wait until just a week before the season to secure a job, fortunately landing back with the Atlanta Braves, an organization that highly regards him.
Meanwhile, some players like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery lingered in the free-agent market longer than anticipated. This raised questions about whether there were any former Braves still seeking employment for the 2024 season.
Tommy La Stella, now 35 and entering his 11th MLB season, initially debuted with the Braves at 25 after a hiatus from the game. Known for his dependable defense at second base and knack for extending at-bats, La Stella became a fan favorite. Despite being an All-Star in 2019 with the Los Angeles Angels, his recent seasons with the Giants and Mariners have been challenging. Retirement might be a consideration at his age, but a return to the league and immediate contributions wouldn’t be surprising.
Robbie Grossman, a switch-hitting outfielder, remains unsigned. He briefly played for the Braves in the latter part of the 2022 season, showing promise with five home runs and 22 RBIs in 46 games. At 34, Grossman still retains some power from both sides of the plate, making him a valuable asset for teams in need of pinch-hitting options.
Although Manny Pina’s stint with the Braves in 2022 was brief, he’s another player currently without a team. Primarily associated with the Brewers throughout his career, Pina boasts respectable stats with a .243 batting average, 43 home runs, and 149 RBIs over ten seasons. Surprisingly, he hasn’t secured a contract as a backup catcher for the 2024 season, possibly considering retirement given his age and the physical demands of his position.
Despite uncertainties, the need for depth in MLB teams suggests that these former Braves players could find new opportunities sooner rather than later.
