The Cincinnati Reds are assessing their alternatives following an unfortunate incident where starting center fielder TJ Friedl sustained a broken right wrist during a diving play in spring training last Saturday.
This setback is particularly challenging for the Reds as they are already anticipating commencing the season without left-handed starter Nick Lodolo (due to a leg injury), as well as relievers Ian Gibaut (dealing with a forearm issue) and Alex Young (recovering from a back problem).
Furthermore, rookie infielder Noelvi Marte, who showed promise, received an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.

Friedl’s injury, diagnosed as a non-displaced fracture in the distal radius, will keep him sidelined for an unspecified period at the start of the season. Stuart Fairchild and Will Benson are being considered as potential replacements in center field.
The Reds are scheduled to begin their season on March 28 against the Washington Nationals.
