Detroit Red Wings goaltending prospect Trey Augustine has had an outstanding season, garnering numerous accolades as a freshman goalie for the Michigan State Spartans. His latest recognition includes being named one of the three finalists for the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year award alongside Ryan Bischel from Notre Dame and Kyle McClellan from Wisconsin.
Augustine leads the Big Ten with an average of 31.75 saves per game and ranks second in the conference with 1016 saves. Additionally, he holds the third position overall with three shutouts. Moreover, Augustine is among the top five in minutes played (1886.08), goals-against average (2.86), and save percentage (.919).
In addition to his collegiate achievements, Augustine, selected 41st overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2023 NHL draft, has already secured a world junior gold medal with Team USA and is a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award, given to the top NCAA goaltender. He played a crucial role in guiding the Spartans to the Big Ten regular-season title, and they are set to face the University of Michigan in the Big Ten championship game.
Meanwhile, Brady Gilmour, who didn’t meet expectations with the Red Wings, has found success in Canadian university hockey. The fourth-year center was named MVP of the U Sports men’s hockey tournament after leading New Brunswick to an undefeated season and a national title. Gilmour, drafted 193rd overall by the Red Wings in 2017, finished the season with 12 goals and 41 points in 30 games and was also recognized as the most sportsmanlike player in U Sports men’s hockey.
In other hockey news, former Red Wings star Igor Larionov has agreed to a three-year contract extension to coach Torpedo in the KHL. Larionov, who is being touted as a potential candidate to become the NHL’s first Russian head coach, will receive a substantial increase in salary. His new contract will see him earn 40 million roubles in the first year, a significant rise from his previous salary of 17 million roubles per season. Additionally, Larionov will receive 50 million roubles in each of the subsequent two years of his contract.
