The Cincinnati Reds are uncertain about when center fielder TJ Friedl will be back in action after he fractured his right wrist during a game in Goodyear, Arizona, while attempting a diving catch. Friedl, who emerged as the Reds’ primary center fielder last season, suffered a distal radius break and stated he will undergo reassessment in three to four weeks.
Expressing his situation, Friedl informed the Cincinnati Enquirer that his current focus is on allowing the bone to heal naturally, emphasizing the importance of keeping his hand stable and minimizing movement.
Last season, the 28-year-old Friedl typically occupied the first or second spot in the batting lineup during his third year in the majors. He compiled a .279 batting average with 18 home runs, 66 RBIs, 47 walks, and 27 stolen bases in 33 attempts.
With Friedl sidelined, there’s a potential for Stuart Fairchild, a right-handed hitter, and Will Benson, a left-handed hitter, to see increased playing time in center field, as noted by Nick Krall, the Reds’ president of baseball operations.
Following a significant improvement from 62 wins and a last-place tie in the NL Central in 2022 to 82 wins in 2023, the Reds, led by a cadre of young talents, were contenders for a wild-card spot until the final stretch of the season, ultimately finishing just two games behind the last playoff position. The team is anticipated to vie for the division title this season.
