Following his departure from the Wests Tigers as head coach before his contract’s end, Tim Sheens has made a surprising comeback to rugby league in a different capacity. With an impressive coaching history, including four premierships and leading the Australian Kangaroos, Sheens briefly returned to the Wests Tigers in 2023 as a mentor to Benji Marshall under a two-year contract, only to depart after a single season.
Known as one of the sport’s greatest coaches, Sheens has had a lengthy coaching career since 1984, overseeing teams like the Tigers, Penrith Panthers, Canberra Raiders, and North Queensland Cowboys, amassing 778 matches. Additionally, he has guided various representative sides, notably the NSW Blues in 1991 and the Kangaroos from 2009 to 2015.
Now, it’s been confirmed that Sheens has taken on a consulting role at Westfields Sports High School, renowned for its exceptional schoolboy rugby league program. The team, led by Lachlan Galvin, recently secured victory in the National Schoolboys Championships with a commanding 38-4 win over Palm Beach Currumbin in the final.
In an interview with Wide World of Sports, Sheens shared his enthusiasm for the new opportunity, explaining that his connection with the school’s coach, Troy Wheedon, led to discussions and ultimately his appointment. With a commitment of three days a week, Sheens looks forward to working with the talented young players at the school, expressing his enduring passion for mentoring and nurturing emerging talent.
