The New York Rangers signaled their intentions during the 2024 Trade Deadline, making strategic acquisitions to address gaps in their lineup and bolster their chances for a successful postseason campaign. Among their moves, they added Alex Wennberg, Jack Roslovic, and Chad Ruhwedel, while also conducting a minor player exchange with the Minnesota Wild involving Turner Elson for Nic Petan. Unlike the previous season, where they landed Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko, they opted against blockbuster trades or pursuing established superstars. Nevertheless, they positioned themselves well for a deep playoff run.
Although there was an opportunity to acquire forward Jake Guentzel, the Rangers opted out due to the high asking price. Elliotte Friedman, in his recent 32 Thoughts podcast, highlighted that the Rangers prioritized their future over immediate gains, refusing to part with top prospects Brennan Othmann and Gabriel Perreault despite the Penguins’ interest. Guentzel eventually landed with the Carolina Hurricanes in a trade that surprised many with its smaller package, showcasing the Rangers’ savvy in maintaining a strong prospect pool.
The deal with the Hurricanes was significant, with Guentzel and Ty Smith moving in exchange for Michael Bunting, Vasily Ponomarev, Ville Koivunen, the rights to Cruz Lucius, a conditional 2024 first-round pick, and a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick. The conditions stipulate that the first-round pick becomes a second-round pick if the Hurricanes fail to reach the Stanley Cup Final, and the Penguins only receive the fifth-round pick if the Hurricanes win the Cup.
While the Rangers could have potentially outbid the Hurricanes for Guentzel, they chose not to sacrifice their future by parting with promising prospects and valuable draft picks. Despite the sting of seeing a division rival secure Guentzel, the Rangers remain confident in their team’s strength and believe they can still overcome their rivals in the postseason.
