Roosters forward Spencer Leniu is set to appear before the NRL Judiciary on Monday evening to await the verdict following an accusation of contrary conduct during his team’s victory over the Broncos in Las Vegas.
Leniu faces allegations of directing a racial slur at Broncos five-eighth Ezra Mam, prompting an immediate referral to the NRL Judiciary. In a statement released on Thursday, the Roosters confirmed that Leniu intends to plead guilty to the charge.
Expressing remorse, Leniu apologized to Mam and his family for the distress caused, acknowledging responsibility for his actions. He clarified that while he used the word in question, it was not intended in a racist manner, emphasizing that it does not reflect his character.
The incident transpired in the 69th minute of the match at Allegiant Stadium, leading to Leniu’s placement on report by referee Adam Gee upon Mam’s accusation. Leniu has since been officially charged with Contrary Conduct.
Roosters CEO Joe Kelly conveyed sincere apologies to Mam, his family, and the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, offering support to all parties involved. He noted Leniu’s transparency and honesty throughout the process, reaffirming the club’s commitment to assisting him during this time.
