Seeing Joey Votto sporting a Toronto Blue Jays uniform next season will be quite startling, especially given his choice of jersey number. The former NL MVP recently spoke to reporters as part of the Blue Jays organization and unveiled his surprising selection: No. 37.
Votto clarified that the choice was primarily due to the limited options available at the time. He also mentioned the uncertainty of retaining that number if he doesn’t secure a spot on the major league roster.
“It was one of the few numbers that was open [for spring],” Votto stated, as reported by Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. “I’m mindful that there might be fans interested in purchasing the jersey. I don’t want them to invest in something that might not pan out… We’ll confirm it if I do make the team.”
Having spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds and wearing No. 19 throughout, the 40-year-old Toronto native signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays earlier this month. While his iconic No. 19 isn’t currently available with the Blue Jays, it’s speculated that the team might be reserving it in honor of former All-Star slugger Jose Bautista. Consequently, Votto’s choice of No. 37, nearly twice that of his previous number, promises to bring an intriguing twist to his presence on the team, with the potential for more memorable moments ahead.
