Anticipate the Denver Broncos to engage in further cost-saving maneuvers during this offseason.
The Broncos have informed quarterback Russell Wilson of their intention to release him after the commencement of the league year on March 13, resulting in an $85 million cap hit. Spotrac’s estimation indicates they currently exceed the cap by $19.2 million. In order to create additional financial flexibility, they may explore the option of trading wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.
According to The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider, Jeudy could be the primary candidate for a trade due to the interest he has previously garnered. Last year, the Broncos exercised the fifth-year option on Jeudy’s rookie contract, valued at $12.98 million, which he is slated to play under this season. If Jeudy were to be traded, Denver would completely alleviate his cap charge for 2024.
Despite being a former first-round pick, Jeudy has not fully met expectations during his four seasons with the Broncos. The 24-year-old has not earned any Pro Bowl nods and has yet to surpass 1,000 receiving yards.
Parting ways with Jeudy would also open up opportunities for promising wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr., who led the team in yards per reception during his rookie season. Head coach Sean Payton hinted at an expanded role for the 21-year-old in 2024, indicating potential growth.
Reports from ESPN’s Jeff Legwold suggest that the Cleveland Browns made several attempts to trade for Jeudy prior to the deadline. While Kosmider notes a shrinking market for Jeudy, the Broncos may be open to accepting a lesser offer.
Although it’s a difficult decision, moving on from the young wideout would be prudent, particularly with Wilson’s significant cap hit impacting the Broncos’ financial situation.
