Broncos coach Kevin Walters has faced criticism for his choice to keep Reece Walsh on the field until late in Saturday’s 34-10 win against the Wests Tigers, despite signs of discomfort from the star fullback. Walsh exhibited signs of distress during the second half, including struggling to stand after tackles, vomiting after scoring, and appearing to suffer from cramps in his calf and knee. Nonetheless, Walters reassured fans that Walsh hadn’t sustained any serious injuries, explaining that he experienced vomiting and cramps but would be ready for the next game.
In addition to Walsh’s struggles, Adam Reynolds also battled cramps and left the match in the 77th minute. Meanwhile, Jock Madden is set for scans on a pectoral injury, while Selwyn Cobbo and Ezra Mam are racing against time to recover for the upcoming clash with the Sydney Roosters. Cobbo (shoulder) and Mam (finger) missed the Tigers game, with their fitness to be evaluated ahead of Friday’s showdown.
The upcoming match against the Roosters carries added tension following an incident in the previous encounter where Mam was subjected to a racial slur. Walters expressed uncertainty about Mam and Madden’s availability for the rematch, indicating that he won’t risk their health so early in the season. If they’re unable to play, Walters has options like Tristan Sailor or Billy Walters to fill the void in the lineup.
