On Thursday, the Red Sox completed a trade, bringing in 28-year-old right-handed pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for cash considerations. They then sent Gutierrez to Triple-A Worcester.
To accommodate Gutierrez on the 40-man roster, Boston moved shortstop Trevor Story to the 60-day injured list, as Story recently had shoulder surgery, ending his season.
Gutierrez, originally from Cuba, has played in 33 major league games, predominantly as a starter, across three seasons. Most of his appearances were with the Reds in 2021 and 2022, but he also made one relief appearance for the Marlins earlier this year. Following that outing, where he allowed three runs, three hits, and two walks while striking out four in four innings, the Marlins designated him for assignment on April 1, and the Brewers claimed him off waivers on April 5.
In his major league career, Gutierrez holds a record of 10-12 with a 5.47 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP, and opponents batting .274 against him over 154 ⅔ innings. In the minors, he has a 4.99 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 83 outings, primarily as a starter.
Gutierrez spent much of 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in July 2022.
In a recent long relief appearance for Miami against the Pirates on March 31, Gutierrez primarily relied on his four-seam fastball, throwing 27 of them with an average velocity of 92.7 mph, along with 23 sliders, 21 changeups, and nine curveballs, according to Baseball Savant.
