MLB team rosters resemble the pens at the DMV—frequently in need of adjustment. The New York Mets have been quite active in tweaking their roster early in 2024, and it seems more changes are on the horizon by May 1.
Among the potential casualties, three stand out:
1) DJ Stewart
Initially viewed as a stopgap measure, DJ Stewart’s presence on the Mets’ roster seemed temporary once J.D. Martinez joined. His versatility in defensive positions, unlike Mark Vientos, who is more limited to corner infield, initially gave him an edge. However, Stewart’s tenure on the roster might be short-lived. Will he be the first to be demoted once Martinez returns?
Although Stewart’s bat has recently picked up, his role as a starter against right-handed pitchers and as a pinch hitter for players like Harrison Bader offers some rationale for his retention. Yet, given the Mets’ emphasis on defense, sending him down to the minors could also be justified, utilizing his remaining option. This approach could spare disappointment, unlike parting ways with another player, which might be a more permanent decision.
