The Denver Broncos resumed their voluntary offseason program at Dove Valley, but one notable figure, wide receiver Courtland Sutton, was absent. It seems Sutton is holding out for a new contract, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Additionally, Sutton had offseason ankle surgery following an injury in the 2023 finale, as reported by 9News’ Mike Klis. Despite the absence, the team and Sutton seem unconcerned, with the team exercising his $2 million guarantee option and Sutton continuing daily workouts in Florida.
Klis also highlighted the financial aspect, noting Sutton’s potentially seeking a stronger commitment from the Broncos, especially after former teammate Jerry Jeudy secured a more lucrative contract with the Cleveland Browns. Jeudy’s deal surpasses Sutton’s in both annual salary and guaranteed money.
Sutton can remain absent without penalty until the mandatory minicamp opens on June 11, after which he may face financial penalties. Despite ranking 15th in total value among wide receivers, Sutton’s salary position, just three spots above Jeudy, might not be satisfactory to him.
Selected in the second round of the 2018 draft, Sutton had a productive season despite the team’s offensive struggles in 2023, recording 59 receptions, 772 yards, and 10 touchdowns.
While Sutton’s decision to stay away is acknowledged, some, like Klis, point out the contrasting commitment shown by other players, such as Garett Bolles, who reported for the offseason program despite having just one year left on his contract with no guaranteed money remaining. Bolles’ situation underscores the business aspect of NFL contracts.
General manager George Paton praised Bolles’ performance last season but hinted at potential changes due to Bolles’ age. The Broncos could have plans for both Bolles and Sutton similar to their approach with Mike McGlinchey.
This situation doesn’t rule out the Broncos pursuing a rookie tackle to groom behind Bolles, potentially preparing for future seasons.
