The Browns’ initial selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, pick No. 54, prompts considerations regarding players they should steer clear of. As anticipation builds for the draft, speculation abounds regarding teams’ strategies to bolster their rosters for both the upcoming season and the long term, with the Cleveland Browns being no exception. Having traded their first-round pick for Deshaun Watson in 2022, the Browns find themselves without a first-round selection for the third consecutive year, although this time they won’t have to wait until the third round to make their first pick.
Identifying areas of need such as wide receiver, running back, offensive line, defensive line, and linebacker, the Browns have already begun addressing some of these gaps through free agency, including adding Jameis Winston as a backup for Watson. However, there remains work to be done in strengthening the team.
With only five picks in this year’s draft, spread across rounds two through seven, general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski must make strategic choices to enhance a team that returned to the postseason last year with aspirations for further success in 2024.
In light of these considerations, there are certain players the Browns should avoid in the 2024 NFL Draft:
Although Nick Chubb is expected to return for the start of the 2024 season, his age (28) and recent ACL injury hint at the twilight of his tenure with the Browns. Consequently, the team should be looking to secure their potential next starting running back or a dependable No. 2 option.
Despite the 2024 running back draft class lacking standout talent, there are still intriguing prospects available in the middle rounds, where the Browns will predominantly find themselves. However, selecting someone like Trey Benson, a common presence in Browns mock drafts, with their first pick at No. 54 should not be a priority.
While Benson possesses the potential to become a quality running back in the league, boasting consecutive 900-yard seasons at Florida State and a knack for breaking tackles, the uncertainty surrounding the position in this year’s draft suggests the Browns should avoid using their second-round pick on a running back, including Benson. If he remains available in the third round, then it might be a more suitable time to consider selecting him.
