The St. Louis Cardinals have begun the 2024 season with a slow start, losing three of their first five games. This comes after finishing last in the National League Central Division standings with a record of 71-91 in the previous season. Adding to their woes, the team has been plagued by injuries, forcing manager Oliver Marmol to rearrange his lineup and pitching rotation early in the season. Notably, pitcher Sonny Gray, acquired in the offseason, was unable to start on opening day due to injury.
Key players such as outfielders Dylan Carlson, Lars Nootbaar, and utilityman Tommy Edman have also struggled due to injuries. However, there are reports suggesting that some of these veterans may return to the lineup soon, providing a glimmer of hope for the team.
Injuries have particularly impacted the Cardinals’ outfield, with Nootbaar suffering from displaced ribs and Carlson dealing with a shoulder injury. Carlson underwent treatment for his shoulder injury and is expected to begin a rehabilitation assignment in the coming weeks. Nootbaar, who was set to start as the team’s right fielder, is expected to return shortly.
Despite some positive performances, such as newcomer Kyle Gibson’s impressive outing against the San Diego Padres, concerns remain about the team’s pitching staff. Reliever Riley O’Brien, who made his debut during the opening series, suffered arm pain and was placed on the injured list with a flexor tendon strain.
The Cardinals will conclude their series in San Diego before returning home for their opener against the Miami Marlins on April 4th.
