Former Collingwood legend Tony Shaw has straightforwardly conveyed to his ex-teammate Gavin Crosisca during a live radio show that had he known about Crosisca’s persistent drug issue during their successful playing days, he would have promptly terminated his contract. Despite their joint triumph in the AFL premiership of 1990, Shaw didn’t hold back in stating his stance.
The discussion unfolded in the context of revelations about the AFL’s policy on drugs, with reports suggesting that around 100 players had been granted undisclosed immunity under the league’s three-strike policy.
The AFL faced scrutiny after Independent Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie raised allegations in federal parliament concerning players who supposedly tested positive for drugs in secret tests and then feigned injuries to evade detection on game days. The AFL defended its position, emphasizing its dedication to player well-being and explaining that by players abstaining from playing, they weren’t violating anti-doping regulations.
During their conversation on 3AW Radio, Shaw was direct in expressing his sentiments to Crosisca, stating that if he had known about Crosisca’s drug use during his tenure as captain at Collingwood, he would have advocated for his dismissal.
In response, Crosisca acknowledged Shaw’s strong stance on illicit drugs, admitting that being dropped by Collingwood at that point in his career would have had severe consequences for him.
Crosisca’s admission in 2012 about his struggles with addiction to alcohol, cannabis, and amphetamines during his football career highlighted the toll it took on his personal and professional life, leading to the loss of his home, business, financial stability, and strained family relationships. Despite repeatedly attempting to quit, he felt powerless against his addiction until he eventually found sobriety.
Reflecting on his past experiences, Crosisca now shares his story as a cautionary tale, aiming to guide other football players towards making healthier choices. He currently serves as a director at Sober Living Rehab in Melbourne and is involved in Collingwood’s well-being department, channeling his experiences to support others in their journey towards recovery and well-being.
