The experienced quarterback aims to secure his position as Kirk Cousins’ backup in 2024. With Desmond Ridder traded by the Atlanta Falcons, it appeared likely that Taylor Heinicke would remain on the team at least through spring and summer, given he’s the only other quarterback besides Cousins under contract. The question was whether he would agree to a restructured deal due to the hefty $9 million cap hit and the team’s limited spending capacity after their initial spree in free agency.
The answer to this query? Yes. Updated figures from Over The Cap indicate that Heinicke’s contract will now have roughly half the original $9 million cap charge for 2024. Essentially, Heinicke accepted a reduced salary to stay, but in return secured more guaranteed money in case the Falcons decide to part ways with him.
According to Jason Fitzgerald, founder of Over The Cap, the adjustment was made prior to Heinicke’s roster bonus deadline, likely to provide the Falcons with more cap space and to clarify Heinicke’s status for the upcoming season.
Although we reached out to the team for comment on Heinicke’s contract adjustment, they declined to provide one.
Heinicke, 31, a native of Georgia, made several starts for the Falcons last season when Desmond Ridder struggled. However, his performance was mixed, with five touchdowns and four interceptions. Despite this, he was praised by Raheem Morris as an “elite backup,” indicating the team values his experience and presence in the locker room.
Looking ahead, Heinicke’s future with the Falcons may hinge on their draft choices. If they select a quarterback early on, Heinicke may need to compete for a roster spot. However, if they opt for a late-round pick or sign another free agent, Heinicke’s experience could secure his position as backup.
Considering Cousins’ age and injury history, it would be wise for the Falcons to both invest in a future quarterback via the draft and retain Heinicke as insurance. Heinicke, eager to prove himself after last season’s challenges, offers significant starting experience in the NFL for a reasonable price.
For now, Heinicke appears slated to remain as the backup quarterback, having weathered the storm of the Falcons’ turbulent quarterback situation in 2023.
