Newcastle United will miss Anthony Gordon’s presence in Tuesday night’s game against Everton at St James’ Park. Gordon, who played a pivotal role in their dramatic 4-3 victory over the weekend, became the first Newcastle player to receive a red card this season after accumulating two yellow cards in that match.
Despite contributing significantly to the win by earning two penalties, which Alexander Isak converted, and assisting Harvey Barnes’ 90th-minute winning goal, Gordon’s late bookings led to his dismissal in stoppage time. Consequently, he will be unavailable for the upcoming home fixture against Everton.
Gordon received his first yellow card in the 80th minute for a foul on Mohammed Kudus while Newcastle was still trailing 3-2. His second yellow came in the 94th minute when he kicked the ball away with Newcastle leading 4-3.
Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, expressed disappointment at Gordon’s red card, acknowledging its significance as a setback for the team. However, he highlighted the emergence of other players like Harvey Barnes and Elliot Anderson who have shown promising form in that position.
Gordon’s absence due to suspension, while a blow for Newcastle, might have a silver lining. His suspension against his former club, Everton, means he will be available for their subsequent match against Fulham. Additionally, it prevents him from being just one booking away from a two-match suspension, which could have happened before the critical 10-booking cutoff point after 32 matches.
