Football head coach Sherrone Moore announced on Thursday that Greg Scruggs has stepped down from his role as Michigan’s defensive line coach. Scruggs, 33, faced legal issues after being arrested for driving under the influence in downtown Ann Arbor early Saturday morning. The university suspended him indefinitely following the incident.
Moore stated, “I have received notification of Greg Scruggs’s immediate resignation. Further comment is withheld as this pertains to a University matter.”
According to a police report obtained by MLive, Scruggs was found with his hazard lights on at the intersection of East William Street and South Fourth Avenue. Scruggs, who joined the Wolverines as an assistant coach recently, informed officers that he was heading home after visiting the Chop House, where he claimed to have had two drinks, and then Pretzel Bell, where he claimed not to have consumed any alcohol.
During a field sobriety test at a nearby gas station, Scruggs exhibited signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes and instability during a balance test. He was arrested around 3 a.m., and his vehicle was towed.
Initially, Scruggs refused a breathalyzer test but later consented at 3:34 a.m., expressing concern about making it to a work meeting at 10 a.m. His blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.16 and 0.17, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08.
Moore commented on Saturday, acknowledging Scruggs’s error and emphasizing accountability. Scruggs was suspended indefinitely pending a review of the incident.
This isn’t Scruggs’s first encounter with DUI charges; he was previously arrested in 2011 during his senior year at the University of Louisville.
Scruggs’s resignation comes as the Wolverines commence spring practice. Moore, who took over as head coach in February, recently finalized his coaching staff by hiring Tony Alford as the running backs coach. Scruggs’s departure necessitates filling another coaching position.
Moore assured reporters of the team’s readiness to adapt to changes, citing the collective effort of the defensive staff in coaching every position. Despite facing challenges, including the loss of several defensive staff members to the NFL, Moore remains focused on the task at hand and acknowledges the need for flexibility in his role as head coach.
