Despite a busy start to free agency, the Falcons still have numerous defensive needs to address. In Mel Kiper’s latest mock draft for ESPN, Atlanta aims to address their most pressing issue: bolstering their pass rush.
The Atlanta Falcons made significant moves in free agency, securing quarterback Kirk Cousins, the top free agent according to NFL.com, and adding three new receivers in Darnell Mooney, Rondale Moore, and Ray-Ray McCloud. However, they have yet to shore up their defensive weaknesses, leaving several gaps to fill apart from a few re-signings.
Although the Falcons were reportedly interested in former Vikings edge rusher Danielle Hunter, they lost out to the Houston Texans. Since then, their activity on the defensive front has been subdued. While it’s unlikely that the Falcons are finished with their additions, there remain significant gaps for them to address in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
While awaiting my own post-free agency mock draft (which will be available on Friday), ESPN’s Mel Kiper has offered his insights. In his mock draft, Kiper predicts that the Falcons will target their most glaring weakness by selecting Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner with the eighth overall pick:
This selection aligns perfectly with the team’s needs and the available talent, as Turner ranks ninth on Kiper’s Big Board… Turner’s impressive college performance, with 22.5 sacks over three seasons, demonstrates his potential. With new coach Raheem Morris at the helm, Turner could thrive.
From various perspectives, this pick is highly logical. Edge rusher remains the team’s most significant need, and while the Falcons have returning rotational players like Lorenzo Carter and Arnold Ebiketie, they were insufficient in 2023. Additionally, Turner fits well with the team’s shift back to a 3-4 base under Raheem Morris and Jimmy Lake.
Furthermore, Turner represents good value, consistently ranking in or near the top 10 on draft boards and being regarded as the top edge rusher in the class. Although some may prefer FSU’s Jared Verse, Turner’s exceptional athleticism and potential make him an attractive option. Turner’s physical attributes, including his impressive speed and size, make him an ideal fit for a 3-4 outside linebacker.
While Turner may require further technical development and isn’t as strong against the run as some other prospects, his youth and upside make him an enticing choice. With the Falcons planning to implement a 3-4 scheme, Turner’s fit becomes even more compelling. If the Falcons trust in their coaching staff, Turner could emerge as the top EDGE prospect with the highest potential.
Overall, drafting Dallas Turner at eighth seems like a strategic move for the Falcons. As for my own choice in Terry Fontenot’s position, I’d lean towards Turner given his potential to bolster the team’s pass rush and fit within their defensive scheme.
