Amidst the myriad trade speculations during the offseason, only three prominent storylines remain following free agency: Tee Higgins at receiver, Haason Reddick on the edge, and Brandon Aiyuk.
Since Deebo Samuel inked a lucrative 3-year, $73.5 million extension in 2022, rumors have persisted about the San Francisco 49ers potentially parting ways with Aiyuk. However, Aiyuk’s stellar performance in the 2023 season, landing him on the second All-Pro team and solidifying his position as the 49ers’ top receiver, has led to conflicting opinions on whether the team should trade him.
Recent reports revealed the 49ers’ asking price for Aiyuk, which the Jacksonville Jaguars turned down: the 17th overall pick and Zay Jones. Considering Aiyuk’s youth (just turned 26) and his exceptional recent season, this asking price seems reasonable.
A new potential destination for Aiyuk has emerged, according to Ari Meirov. Aiyuk seems to be teasing this possibility deliberately, knowing that any hint of trade interest from him will quickly spread through the media, especially during the quiet post-free agency period.
Despite Aiyuk’s teasing, his expression of interest in a trade could accelerate discussions, particularly as the 49ers have stated their price, which appears reasonable. This indicates their willingness to engage in trade talks, especially in anticipation of a strong wide receiver class.
Furthermore, the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be a logical fit for Aiyuk’s next team. With the departure of Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for cornerback Donte Jackson, the Steelers are in need of a new primary receiver to complement George Pickens and other role players like Calvin Austin III and Van Jefferson.
Given their acquisition of Russell Wilson to revitalize their offense after struggles under previous quarterbacking regimes, the Steelers aim to provide their new signal-caller with a formidable receiving corps to compete effectively in the tough AFC North division.
