Edmonton Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais potentially sustained an injury during a confrontation with Colorado Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson. Head coach Kris Knoblauch indicated that Desharnais might be sidelined for an unspecified duration following the incident. While the severity of the injury remains uncertain, Knoblauch mentioned that Desharnais did not participate in the third period after the altercation with Manson.
The skirmish occurred in the second period when Desharnais and Manson engaged in a physical altercation during a scrum near the net. Although Desharnais landed a solid punch during the altercation, it is unclear if this caused his injury. Knoblauch stated that Desharnais was being evaluated, and the team hopes the injury is not serious. Although both players left the ice near the end of the second period, Desharnais did not return for the third, prompting concerns about his condition.
In the event of Desharnais being sidelined, the Oilers will rely on newly-acquired defenseman Troy Stecher, whom they acquired before the trade deadline precisely for such situations. While the Oilers have been relatively healthy thus far, injuries are inevitable, and Desharnais’ absence will be felt, especially considering his significant contributions this season, including his role in penalty killing.
There is optimism that Desharnais’ injury, if any, is minor. However, if he is unable to play in future games against the Avalanche, there is a possibility of heightened tensions given the circumstances of the initial altercation.
