It’s reported that Collingwood’s Tom Mitchell is managing an ankle issue, leading the Magpies to opt for resting the Brownlow Medal winner for Friday’s game against Sydney.
Mitchell was designated as ‘managed’ among the premiers’ absences for their Round 1 match at the MCG, with defender John Noble left out from the team that lost to GWS in the opening round.
There was surprise when Mitchell wasn’t named in Craig McRae’s lineup and was given rest after just one game into the new season. The Magpies later informed 7 News that the experienced midfielder is grappling with an ankle problem.
In his abbreviated appearance against the Giants, Mitchell managed nine disposals and scored a goal before being substituted for Noble.
Replacing Mitchell, the Magpies included young midfielder Finlay Macrae, who was selected as the tactical substitute.
Veteran defender Jeremy Howe also returned to Collingwood’s lineup after recovering from a calf injury that sidelined him for the season opener.
Mitchell might return for Collingwood’s Round 2 fixture against St Kilda, with subsequent matches against Brisbane and Hawthorn leading up to their Round 5 bye.
McRae’s team is aiming for a rebound on Friday after starting their title defense with a loss, facing Sydney who commenced their campaign with a victory over Melbourne in the opening round.
