According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, agents David Mulugheta and AJ Stevens have confirmed that the Atlanta Falcons have struck a deal with free agent wide receiver Darnell Mooney, signing him to a lucrative three-year contract valued at $39 million, with $26 million guaranteed.
Mooney’s arrival strengthens the Falcons’ offensive capabilities, offering new quarterback Kirk Cousins another dynamic playmaker to work with. Alongside talents such as tight end Kyle Pitts, receiver Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson, Mooney brings versatility and speed to Atlanta’s offensive lineup.
Originally drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Mooney enjoyed a breakout season in 2021, tallying 81 receptions for 1,055 yards and four touchdowns. However, his performance suffered in the following seasons due to injuries and inconsistent play.
Struggling to establish himself as the Bears’ primary receiving option behind DJ Moore, Mooney experienced a decline in production, culminating in a career-low 31 catches for 414 yards and a touchdown in 2023. Furthermore, an ankle injury limited his playing time to just 12 games in the 2022 season.
Despite these challenges, Mooney has exhibited his talent and potential, leading the Bears in receiving yards in 2022 with 493 yards. Throughout his career spanning 60 games, he has amassed 213 receptions for 2,593 yards and 11 touchdowns.
