An Original Six franchise is ensuring some depth within its organization by securing a contract extension for forward Tim Gettinger. The Detroit Red Wings revealed on Monday that Gettinger has signed a one-year, two-way contract extension until the end of the 2024-25 season, with a cap hit of the league minimum at $775,000.
Although currently on a one-year deal with the Red Wings, Gettinger hasn’t played for Detroit this season. Instead, he has spent the entire 2023-24 campaign with their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Hailing from North Olmsted, Ohio, Gettinger has previously played 16 NHL games, all with the New York Rangers, who drafted him in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. His solitary point in the NHL came on Nov. 22, 2019, against the Ottawa Senators. His last NHL appearance was during the 2021-22 season when he played a career-high eight games with the Rangers.
In the AHL, the 25-year-old has consistently contributed offensively, tallying 12 goals and 13 assists with the Griffins, placing him tied for seventh in team scoring with 25 points. Over his career, spanning 288 AHL games, Gettinger has amassed 74 goals and 84 assists. He was particularly impressive in the 2022-23 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, registering a career-best 35 points. Recently, he marked his 300th professional game on March 1, 2024, against the Iowa Wild.
Despite their efforts, the Red Wings find themselves out of a playoff position, currently sitting fifth in the Atlantic Division with 72 points, trailing the Toronto Maple Leafs by 10 points for third place. Meanwhile, the Griffins are performing well in the AHL’s Central Division, holding onto the second position, albeit 11 points behind the division leaders, the Milwaukee Admirals, who are affiliated with the Nashville Predators.
