Projected top pick Caleb Williams won’t be heavily involved at the 2024 NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. Despite attending the event, he’s decided against participating in both throwing drills and medical examinations, according to reports from CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones and ESPN.
This decision marks a departure from tradition, as Williams appears to be the first player ever to decline the medical portion of the NFL Scouting Combine. However, he intends to undergo medical evaluations with individual teams during the pre-draft process.
The combine, managed by National Football Scouting (NFS) on behalf of the NFL, has seen increased feedback from players seeking to streamline the medical examination process in recent years.
While Williams’ choice is unprecedented, it reflects a broader trend among prospects who have voiced concerns about the duration and redundancy of medical evaluations. This development could prompt more prospects to follow suit in the future.
Several teams, including the Bears, Commanders, Raiders, Vikings, Falcons, Patriots, Jets, and Giants, have already met with Williams at the combine, with more engagements expected at his USC pro day.
Williams is scheduled to address the media on Friday morning in Indianapolis.
