Harry Maguire emphasizes the necessity for Manchester United to maintain their winning streak as they endeavor to overtake teams ahead of them in the league standings and secure a spot in the Champions League for the next season. United enters Sunday’s match against Luton following three consecutive Premier League victories, marking their best run in the division so far this season.
Their recent string of wins has allowed them to narrow the gap on Aston Villa, currently in fifth place, and Tottenham Hotspur, occupying fourth place, with the two teams set to face each other next month. Despite the positive start to 2024, Maguire acknowledges that United cannot afford to become complacent and must continue to apply pressure.
“We’ve experienced a good run of form recently, but we’re not yet at our desired position in the standings,” Maguire explained to Sky Sports. “We’re still trailing in terms of points, so each upcoming match is crucial for us to secure the three points. Our objective at the beginning of the season wasn’t merely to make it to the top four; we aimed higher. However, considering our current situation, we understand the importance of attaining Champions League qualification, as it’s a standard expected by this club for the upcoming season.”
Maguire also expressed his satisfaction with the emergence of young talents like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo under the management of Erik ten Hag. He sees their progress as a promising sign for the club’s future and believes their opportunities are well-deserved.
“It’s highly encouraging to witness the development of young players within our club,” he remarked. “Manchester United has established a culture where young talents are given opportunities, and if they perform well, they earn their place in the team. Since the arrival of our current manager, there has been a notable emphasis on integrating youth into the squad. If a player, regardless of age, demonstrates quality and consistency, they rightfully retain their spot in the lineup.”
