Carlos Alcaraz has expressed support for fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal’s decision to become an ambassador for the Saudi Arabian Tennis Federation (STF), stating that Nadal is the perfect individual to aid in the growth of tennis in the Middle Eastern nation.
Alcaraz, who is currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina, addressed the criticism surrounding Nadal’s partnership with the STF, emphasizing that he sees no issue with Nadal taking on the role of a tennis ambassador.
He highlighted the potential for tennis to reach new audiences in a developing country like Saudi Arabia, noting Nadal’s influence in expanding the sport’s popularity.
As part of his duties, Nadal will visit Saudi Arabia multiple times a year to assist in nurturing the junior tennis scene in the country.
Despite criticisms of the move, which some argue may be a form of sportwashing, Alcaraz remains optimistic about the collaboration between Saudi Arabia and tennis, citing the country’s rapid evolution and the positive impact on the sport’s global reach.
Alcaraz also acknowledged his participation in tennis events in Saudi Arabia, including an exhibition match against Novak Djokovic, and looks forward to competing in future events like the ‘Six Kings Slam,’ where players are offered substantial appearance fees and prize money.
