John McEnroe has outshone Nick Kyrgios in a recent poll conducted by Express Sport, following Kyrgios’ debut as a commentator for Eurosport during the Australian Open. Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist, has been on the sidelines due to injuries for about 16 months. Despite his return to the tennis scene in a new capacity after withdrawing from the first Major tournament of the year due to injury, tennis enthusiasts have favored McEnroe over Kyrgios as the top pundit.
Kyrgios has been inactive since the end of 2022, making only one appearance last summer which resulted in a loss. His career has been hampered by knee and wrist injuries, leading to knee surgery early last year. While focusing on his rehabilitation, he has temporarily shifted his attention to a new role within tennis.
In recent months, the 28-year-old has ventured into commentary, initially joining America’s Tennis Channel for the ATP Finals before joining the Eurosport team for the Australian Open. Kyrgios spent significant time in the commentary booth, including during the final match between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev.
Despite receiving positive feedback for his insights from fans, Kyrgios was still overshadowed by McEnroe in the eyes of viewers as the preferred TV analyst. Forty-four percent of Express Sport readers voted for the seven-time Grand Slam champion McEnroe as the top pundit for the Australian Open, while Kyrgios secured second place with 28 percent. Kyrgios entertained fans with anecdotes, such as his exchanges of memes with Novak Djokovic and his early impression of Medvedev’s playing style.
