According to a report by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), the organizer of the Hong Kong XI vs. Inter Miami friendly, where Lionel Messi was absent due to injury, has announced a partial refund for ticket holders. Tatler Asia, the organizer, stated they will take responsibility and offer a 50 percent refund to those who purchased tickets through official channels.
Details regarding the refund process will be disclosed by mid-March. Inter Miami emerged victorious in the match with a score of 4-1 at the Hong Kong Stadium, despite facing backlash from fans who expressed dissatisfaction and demanded refunds due to Messi’s absence. Messi, reportedly dealing with a hamstring issue, was unable to participate. Tatler Asia, which initially anticipated a profit of 13 million Hong Kong Dollars, is now expected to incur losses of approximately 43 million Hong Kong Dollars.
The absence of both Messi and Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez was attributed to a decision made in consultation with the medical team. Inter Miami apologized for Messi’s non-appearance.
Meanwhile, Messi played for over 30 minutes in a separate friendly against Japanese club Vissel Kobe. Inter Miami concluded their preseason tour in Tokyo and is set to play Messi’s former club, Newell’s Old Boys of Argentina, in a friendly in Florida on Feb. 16, ahead of the upcoming MLS season scheduled to commence on Feb. 21.
