Alexander Volkanovski anticipates that Ilia Topuria will undergo a “humbling experience” when he revises his social media biography after their main event clash at UFC 298 later this month. As the reigning featherweight champion, Volkanovski has established a formidable presence in the division. However, he encountered setbacks in 2023, losing twice to lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, once via decision in February and another via knockout in October.
These results have bolstered Topuria’s already robust confidence, prompting the Georgian-Spaniard to update his Instagram and X bios, falsely claiming to be a “UFC World Champion” with an undefeated record of 15-0, despite actually being 14-0 with 12 stoppage victories.
During an appearance on the Free Stylebender YouTube channel on Wednesday (February 7), Volkanovski expressed his perspective, portraying himself as the seasoned champion poised to humble his opponent. He expressed his belief that Topuria’s demeanor would likely change drastically after their upcoming press conference.
Volkanovski emphasized that the responsibility of revising his bio should fall squarely on Topuria himself, rather than his management or trainers. He stressed the importance of earning one’s position, citing the mantra “Earned not given,” which he has long embraced.
Although Volkanovski has never been defeated at featherweight, his three career losses occurred twice at 155lbs against Makhachev and once at welterweight in 2013. Notably, his loss to Makhachev in October was on short notice.
In between his encounters with Makhachev, Volkanovski secured a victory over Yair Rodriguez in July, marking his fifth successful title defense. Meanwhile, Topuria comes into UFC 298 following a dominant decision win against Josh Emmett in June.
